Annual Hainan Waterbird Survey
Hainan has diverse and extensive wetland ecosystems providing suitable habitats for different waterbirds. Unfortunately, many of these areas are unprotected and their conservation values are not fully recognised.
Since 2003, Kadoorie Conservation China (KCC), a Department of KFBG, together with the Hainan Provincial Forestry Department and other partners, has been conducting an annual winter waterbird survey covering around 60 sites throughout the island.
These surveys have yielded many new island records and discovered new wintering sites for global threatened species, such as the Black-faced Spoonbill (Platalea minor). The conservation values of these sites have since gained public recognition and some have accordingly been designated as nature reserves.
