Mobilising the Community into Conservation – Orchid Valley in Yingjiang County, Yunnan

Established in 2002 as a private land owned by a lady, Orchid Valley adjacent to Tongbiguan Provincial Nature Reserve in Yingjiang County of Yunnan Province, China, is a little known paradise for wildlife within a tiny patch of pristine forest.

Its pristine forest cultivated with rich biodiversity and rare species is going to build into a demonstration base for scientific research, biodiversity conservation and nature education. It will inspire the neighbouring communities to participate in conservation to harmonising their relationship with nature.

Since 2016, Kadoorie Conservation China Department (KCC) guided in the design of the whole farm to convert into an “Eco Lodge” as a way of sustainable income for the lady to conserve her pristine forest. A series of environmental friendly facilities, such as composting toilets, an environmental-friendly chicken house, ecological agricultural system and etc. are constructed. KCC also trained the farm owner in Eco Lodge management and mobilising the community to get involved in infrastructure conversion, community – based biodiversity conservation and encourage sustainable livelihoods.
