Nature’s Nobility – Discovering the wonder of orchids

1. Nature / Objectives
Despite its reputation as a financial hub, Hong Kong should also be known also for its ecological riches. It is part of the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot; altogether, such hotspots cover about 2% of the Earth’s surface but support over 60% of its flora and fauna. They are threatened by deforestation, urbanisation, industrial agriculture and pollution, and all are losing species at a rapid rate. Orchids have delicate interactions with their environment, making them a good indicator of this looming crisis.

Orchids are found worldwide but are most diverse in the tropics with over 2,000 species in this Hotspot, and over 130 species in Hong Kong. Sadly, many are threatened by the clearance of natural forests that once stretched from India to southern China and continued poaching from remaining fragments to fuel the horticultural and medicinal trade. Visit this exhibition to learn about the amazing orchid and their conservation here – the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot.
