2016 Aquaponics Conference

Time: Whole day

Public Events

1. Nature/Objective

Aquaponics is a new farming technology which incorporates both the merits of Aquaculture and Hydroponics, and overcomes the shortcomings of the two systems. Globally, there is growing interest in utilizing aquaponics for advancing urban sustainability in terms of food supply, nutrient recycling and food education. The Hong Kong Aquaponics Conference 2016 aims to facilitate exchange and networking between experts and practitioners, to advance the development of aquaponics.

4. Speakers

Keynote Speakers

Dr Nate Storey, Founder & CEO, Bright Agrotech, USA

Nate Storey has been designing and operating equipment for aquaponics and hydroponic applications for almost a decade. He completed his PhD work at the University of Wyoming researching vertical aquaponics production methods, and currently serves as the CEO at Bright Agrotech, a company that leads the industry in aquaponics and vertical farming equipment. Apart from designing innovative systems such as the well-known ZipGrow towers, Bright Agrotech has made effective use of social media to establish important dialogues to educate, inform and promote vertical farming.

Gregory Chow, Senior lecturer and Centre Manager for Urban Horticulture & Greenscape, School of Life Sciences and Chemical Technology, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore

Mr. Gregory Chow is a senior Life Sciences lecturer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. He has 25 years of experience in research and commercial hydroponics cultivation in Australia and Singapore. Mr Chow pioneered the first commercial aeroponic establishment and hospital rooftop community farm in Singapore in 1990s. He incorporated his early work on greenhouse optimisation trials of high-value crop species into tropical urban agriculture in dense built-up environment (vertical farming) as an alternative method of crop production to satisfy consumers’ dietary needs. This includes integrating aquaculture with hydroponics (aquaponics). His current R&D activities include controlled environment agriculture (CEA) that incorporates hydroponics, aquaponics and LEDs with emphasis on light optimisation for plant biomass production.

Panel Speakers

Wang Shumin, Founder, Aone Home Farm, China

Wang Shumin studied biochemistry in US in 1990s and served trans-national corporations at China in 2000s. Subsequent to the learning about the aquaponics technologies at Hawaii in 2010, he collaborated with his partner Max to set up Aone Home Farm and plays an active role to promote aquaponics in China.

Steffi Lee, Founder, AVATA Aquaponics, Taiwan

After learning the aquaponics technologies in Hawaii in 2010, Steffi Lee established AVATA aquaponics in Taiwan to promote aquaponics in 2011. She has started teaching design and setting up of aquaponics systems since July 2012. Steffi’s works was widely reported by media in Taiwan and she has started lecturing about aquaponics at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology since 2013. In 2014, she was elected as the chairperson of Taiwan Aquaponics Association. Steffi has also developed various aquaponics systems that are compatible for use in education, household and commercial farms in these two years.

Augustine To, Founder, efarm, Hong Kong

Augustine To established efarm (www.efarmhk.com) in 2007 to practice farming with an emphasis on environmental protection. Since he completed his permaculture design course in Taiwan, he believes sustainable eco-farming should be the path for efarm to pursue. Aquaponics is one of the startup elements of the efarm. Sustainable operations have been gradually advanced and the farm has been using black solider fly to recover food waste to fish feed. This is an important step forward to make efarm more ecofriendly and sustainable.
Dr Ka Keung Lau, Founder and CEO of Cityponics, Hong Kong

Dr KK Lau is an energetic and enthusiastic advocator of bringing food production back to city through education and practice. He is also one of the founders of Good Life Centre, Food Resources Education Centre, Green Map Hong Kong, Effective Microorganism Association and Permaculture Institute. He has rich experience in bio-technology and agriculture technology for many years. Dr Lau is a biochemist, environmental scientist, microbiologist, permaculturist, and most important of all, a DREAMER.
