Urgent Action Needed to Protect Hong Kong’s Biodiversity

Do you love our countryside and the amazing wild areas of Hong Kong?
And do you want to live in a place where the seas are protected and unpolluted and the diverse animals and plants living on our land and on our mountains are preserved for our grandchildren and future generations?

Please consider taking time to contribute to the consultation below
(BSAP Consultation Submission – DEADLINE 11th July 2025)

Dear Friends,

As you may know, the HK Government has opened a public consultation on Hong Kong's Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (BSAP). The consultation will be completed on 11th July 2025. The consultation document can be reviewed and downloaded here, and you are invited to send your comments directly to AFCD through email to support this process and help to ensure that as many voices are heard as possible. Please also encourage colleagues, family and friends too; share it far and wide.

Some technical guiding questions have been provided by the Government - on p. 33 of the consultation document (here).

Below we provide 5 areas for further attention that KFBG will be recommending to the Government – you are welcome to join us in making a difference regarding the future of Hong Kong’s amazing landscapes, and animal and plant protection.

- Halt further habitat loss (farmland, wetland, woodland and sea) and enhance protection of existing important habitats;
- Formulate lists of threatened species and more action plans for most threatened species (e.g., Eurasian Otter, Chinese White Dolphin, Big-headed Turtle);
- Restore degraded/ lost habitats (e.g., lowland stream, woodland, wetland);
- Mainstream biodiversity consideration into various sectors especially works and development proponents;&
- Enhance local and cross-boundary ecological corridor and ecological habitat network through the provision of greenways, wildlife corridors, etc.

Please write to the Government under the title: Urgent Action Needed to Protect Hong Kong’s Biodiversity and write in your own words where you feel action would be most needed under the plan. You are welcome to copy and paste any of the 5 items above.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Regarding the public consultation on updating the Hong Kong Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (BSAP), I am writing to submit my views.

As a concerned citizen of Hong Kong, I suggest that the government consider taking the following urgent actions:

- Halt further habitat loss (farmland, wetland, woodland and sea) and enhance protection of existing important habitats

- Formulate lists of threatened species and more action plans for most threatened species (e.g., Eurasian Otter, Chinese White Dolphin, Big-headed Turtle)

- Restore degraded/ lost habitats (e.g., lowland stream, woodland, wetland)

- Mainstream biodiversity consideration into various sectors especially works and development proponents;&

- Enhance local and cross-boundary ecological corridor and ecological habitat network through the provision of greenways, wildlife corridors, etc.

>> Please feel free to include anything else. <<

Thank you for considering my submission.

Sincerely,

Your name
