Impressions, Expressions|Hong Kong Native Plant Photo Contest Exhibition

Hosted by Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG), The ‘Impressions, Expressions|Hong Kong Native Plant Photo Contest’ serves as a prelude to the botanical art exhibition ‘Impressions, Expressions – feeling & depicting nature’. Beyond celebrating the beauty of Hong Kong’s precious native plants, the event aims to raise public awareness and appreciation for local biodiversity while highlighting the KFBG’s vital conservation work.

The photo contest registration closed on 16 August 2025, and we are grateful for the enthusiastic public participation, which has demonstrated the natural beauty and ecological value of Hong Kong's native plants through inspiring nature photography. The winning works are currently on display at KFBG's covered plaza, and we warmly invite the public to view these pieces closely during their visit and draw insight and inspiration from them.

Gold Award

Participant: Chan Wang Leong
Photo Title: 菰蜂自賞
Plant: Hong Kong Balanophora

This photo beautifully captures animals, plants and soil together. The bright colours are eye-catching, showing the vibrant life found in Hong Kong’s natural environment.

A truly splendid, richly coloured depiction of a very unusual plant interacting with a surprising visitor. My mind boggles at how difficult it must have been to get this shot – the clamber to the habitat, the technical set-up, the lighting and the patience – all executed with perfect timing and precision. From the crisp shades of orange that bring the stippled surface of the female inflorescence into sharp focus, to the delicate powdery pollen on the male flowers, the viewer is brought down to the scale of the soil and leaf litter, as if these plants are towering alien forms. The inquisitive wasp, adding yellow to the picture's warm palette, makes this a very real glimpse into the ecology of this dweller of the forest floor.

Photo Title: 風之子
Plant: Long-hairy Clematis

很多借助風力傳播種子的植物,其種子都有像棉花的結構。這種香港原生植物絲鐵線蓮也不例外,它的種子的結構很特別。

A supremely balanced shot that blends softness and sharpness right down to individual, wispy hairs. The viewer's focus is immediately drawn to the bold head of Clematis seeds, neatly positioned left of centre, but as the eye takes in the rest of the image, one cannot help but be mesmerised by the delicate tails of each seed, as if calligraphy in a Chinese ink painting. The depth of field is generous enough to enable these microscopic details to be shown with clarity, but the image in its entirety is bathed in lovely ethereal light, grading from greens and browns at top-left to white on the right, making this a gentle and absorbing piece of ecological art.

This photo captures the quintessential beauty features of Hong Kong’s countryside: orchids, stream/waterfall and forest. The composition of these three elements provides a wonderful setting for the orange orchid flowers and brings out their natural beauty.
