- Introduction
Do you know how many plant species can be found in the wild in Hong Kong?
Have you ever wondered how these native plants are pollinated?
Do you know which species can be used to make natural dyes and preserves or to celebrate particular festivals?
Plants are all around us, but how much do you know about the many ways in which they support our lives?
KFBG Plant Encounters programme, which offers four sessions per month, introduces the diversity and ecology of Hong Kong native plants. You will learn from staff of KFBG’s Flora Conservation Department about the generous green world that surrounds us, thus deepening your appreciation of the fragile beauty of the many rare species that naturally occur here. Income is used to support KFBG's ongoing plant conservation work.
Keep an eye on the monthly schedule and join us to delve into our beautiful but threatened flora – and grow your understanding of why protecting native plants is a vital shared responsibility.
October’s theme: Diverse strategies for restoring Hong Kong’s forests
Forest restoration is a core focus of KFBG’s efforts to enhance the biodiversity of Hong Kong. This month, we are excited to present two topics related to this mission.
"Unlocking secrets of the canopy: laser insights for sustainable forest management"
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology is increasingly playing a transformative role in forest management. By generating precise 3D images, LiDAR enables accurate analysis of forest structure, canopy mapping and carbon stock estimation, supporting decision-making for sustainable forestry and biodiversity conservation.
Joshua and Mang will carry out a LiDAR scanning demonstration in their session. Challenges, advancements and future directions for integrating LiDAR with other remote sensing technologies to revolutionise forest management in the face of climate change and environmental challenges will be highlighted.
“Transforming degraded sites into diverse, native forest through enrichment planting”
In Paul’s session, participants will visit one of KFBG’s restoration projects at the Butterfly Path to learn how we are transforming a degraded, low-biodiversity site into a vibrant, biodiversity-rich ecosystem through enrichment planting with native plant species. This project also creates a sanctuary for many threatened native plant species and supporting myriad dependent wildlife, while showcasing the stunning and often unseen botanical flora that thrive throughout Hong Kong’s countryside.
Income will be used to support KFBG's plant conservation work. Spaces are limited, so sign up now!
