Step inside the lab where DNA evidence helps stop the illegal wildlife trade.
The Conservation Genetics Laboratory at KFBG leverages cutting-edge DNA technologies to help combat illegal wildlife trade and protect endangered species. Dr. Huarong Zhang, Senior Conservation Geneticist, will lead a guided tour of the Laboratory and share behind-the-scenes stories of its work.
DNA detective work
What the Laboratory Does
We conduct surveys of dried seafood and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) markets in Hong Kong and use DNA analysis to monitor illegal wildlife trade activities. For instance, we are currently conducting a study on medicinal orchids used as TCM in Hong Kong. We have assisted Hong Kong authorities in identifying seized wildlife specimens and even discovered a new pangolin species through analysis of confiscated scales.
