“Gaia & Us: deepening our connection to nature”

Online Talk with Dr. Stephan Harding
Date: 29 Mar 2023
Location:  Online

Introduction

We invite you to meet online with Dr. Stephan Harding, an ecologist and founding faculty member of Schumacher College, a UK-based educational centre dedicated to ecology that has pioneered the teaching of holistic science.

During this talk, Stephan explores how the Sky God cultures, which overran the Gaia/Mother Earth cultures of Western Europe around 2000 BCE, eventually gave rise to the current global ecological crisis. Using the principles of holistic science, he shows how the relationships between living beings and the rocks, atmosphere and oceans of our planet give rise to a modern, science-based understanding of Gaia as our emergent self-regulating Earth. We discover the importance of biodiversity for maintaining Gaia's health and consider how myth, dream and story can help us re-discover ways of living well within the limits set for humanity by the living dynamics of our planet.

Speaker:

Stephan is one of the founding members of Schumacher College, an international centre of transformative education for sustainable living, in Devon, UK. He coordinated and lectured on the master’s degree in holistic science for nearly two decades, besides teaching on many of the college's short courses.  Stephan has taught alongside many of the world’s leading ecological thinkers and activists, including Arne Naess, the proponent of deep ecology, and James Lovelock, proponent of Gaia theory, as well as Fritjof Capra, Lynn Margulis, Brian Goodwin and Rupert Sheldrake. He is now the Deep Ecology Fellow at Schumacher College and is a teacher on several ecological educational projects internationally.
