Hainan Gibbon Conservation – Where Science Meets Humanity

Since 1998, our Kadoorie Conservation China Programme (KCC) team has been dedicated to conserving endangered species and ecosystems across Hainan, Yunnan, Guangdong and Guangxi. A key focus is saving gibbons – rare, tree-dwelling primates critical to forest regeneration. Of the seven gibbon species native to China, two are extinct in the wild and five remain critically endangered in the country.

KFBG supports the world’s rarest gibbon species – including the Hainan, Gaoligong and Cao-vit gibbons – through research, habitat restoration and community-based initiatives. To bring these powerful conservation stories to life for Hong Kong students, KFBG offers a gibbon-themed school talk that features exclusive field footage, gibbon vocalisations and interactive content (approximately 1 hour). Schools may also request a set of exhibition panels and receive training for student ambassadors to help ripple and sustain the learning among themselves.

School Talk Content

  1. Introduction to Hainan gibbons: their behaviour, biology, and uniqueness.
  2. Overview of gibbon species and their habitats in China.
  3. Key threats leading to gibbon population decline and extinction.
  4. KFBG’s gibbon conservation work in mainland China.
  5. How everyday products connect Hong Kong to rainforest loss.

Add-on Option
To further engage students and reinforce conservation messages, 8 exhibition panels featuring the world’s rarest gibbon – the Hainan Gibbon – can be rented by schools for a one-week period at a cost of HK$500. This helps sustain students’ interest and encourages deeper reflection on species conservation.

Learning Objectives Knowledge Skill Value
1. Deepen student understanding of gibbons, biodiversity and forest ecosystems
2. Highlight the interdisciplinary nature of conservation – the combination of science and sociocultural factors
3. Raise awareness of how Hong Kong consumption impacts global rainforests
