Job Summary

The Kadoorie Conservation China Programme is seeking a passionate individual to support the Otter Conservation Project funded by the Lantau Conservation Fund. This project aims to conduct the first comprehensive island-wide survey of Eurasian otters on Lantau and its adjacent waters to assess their past and current distribution and status, identify the key sites and major threats for the otter conservation on Lantau, and enhance public awareness regarding otter conservation.

This position is survey-intensive, requiring frequent outdoor fieldwork in diverse environments, such as uneven and/or rugged terrain, coastlines, rocky streams, and mangrove wetlands, for extended periods. Candidates should be prepared for exposure to varying and harsh weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, or wind.

This position offers the opportunity to join the KCC team and gain experience in areas related to endangered species conservation, biodiversity surveys, capacity building, and awareness raising.

This is an individual contributor role. The incumbent will report to the Conservation Officer.

Major Responsibilities

  • Support KCC’s Lantau Otter Conservation Project, including project implementation, monitoring and reporting.
  • Conduct fieldwork and assist in subsequent data analysis using traditional and molecular methods.
  • Assist in preparation of the reports, presentation and scientific articles to enhance the conservation of target species/ecosystems.
  • Support capacity building, awareness-raising and sustainability programmes/activities related to the otter conservation project.
  • Represent KCC and KFBG at local and international meetings, conferences and symposia.
  • Other assignments and ad hoc events when necessary assigned by direct supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • Degree holder in or related to Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Zoology and/or Conservation Biology.
  • Minimum of one year of relevant work experience.
  • Experience in field survey, camera trap maintenance, molecular work, biodiversity conservation project or protected area management is preferred.
  • Familiar with the fauna in Hong Kong and south China would be an advantage.
  • Proficient in written and/or spoken Cantonese, Putonghua, English, and computer literacy.
  • Knowledge in coastal/freshwater ecology, photography, GIS and multimedia production would be an advantage.
  • Good team player with strong people skills.
  • Appreciates and enjoys working with a wide range of people.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively in a team.
  • Fit and willing to do physical fieldwork in a range of weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Multi-tasking ability is essential.
  • A valid driving license would be an advantage.
  • Occasional travel to mainland China and elsewhere is required.
