Central to KFBG’s goal of conserving local biodiversity is the need to find, propagate, cultivate and plant out Hong Kong’s incredibly diverse but highly threatened flora. Underpinning this drive is the understanding that life in Hong Kong is best served by the plants that naturally grow here – that is, our native plants – as they are quite literally rooted in Hong Kong’s history, stretching back millions of years, ever since tropical soils first formed here and tropical forests first clothed its hills and valleys, supporting its many native animals, fungi and microorganisms. By the same token, we distinguish the plants that have been introduced into Hong Kong and the region by modern market forces over the preceding century or two (a far shorter timespan by comparison) – whether intentionally as houseplants, ornamental garden plants, urban and forestry trees, or accidentally as agricultural and horticultural weeds – as non-native, introduced and often invasive plants that may be doing far more harm than good.
Given the precarious status of many – perhaps most – of Hong Kong’s native plants, our mission is to ensure no further species loss occurs, and that our beautiful, fantastically rich and naturally beneficial flora thrives for the coming millennia.
To achieve this, KFBG operates a series of native plant nurseries that routinely grow hundreds of native Hong Kong plant species, ranging from trees, shrubs and climbers, to herbs, ferns and orchids.
