This 90 minute experience offers a deep immersion weaving together art and ecology. Guiding you from the woodcraft creations inside the Ripples & Pulses Between the Rings | Growth Ring x ALVDALEN Joint Woodcraft Exhibition out into the natural woodland, our guide leads you on a journey that extends the reflections and emotion of the exhibition straight into the living forest.

The journey begins inside the gallery, featuring works thoughtfully crafted by Growth Ring apprentices using locally reclaimed timber, alongside ecological installation art created from KFBG’s wood by artist-in-residence Alvdalen. Here, discover how timber transforms from a simple forest resource into an artistic medium carrying time, memory, and imagination.

From there, the tour steps out into the mountain breeze. Moving beyond quiet viewing and contemplation inside the gallery, this experience grounds the story of wood back into nature itself. Participants explore the Lower Area to meet 10 iconic native tree species up close, including Incense Tree, Banyan, Water Pine and Camphor, exploring their ecological roles and deep connections to Hong Kong’s history, culture and daily life.

From conservation stories of threatened species to practical timber rooted in village memory, every tree quietly records the passage of time. Connecting craft with nature and observation with listening, this gentle journey invites you to slow down, feel the subtle, interdependent rhythms of the forest, and discover the endless possibilities of local resources through cycles of care and renewal.

About Growth Ring
As part of our routine tree management at Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, we sometimes need to prune or even remove certain trees. The timber, sourced from our own forests, possesses unique grain patterns that serve as an imprint of our local landscape. Unwilling to see this valuable material go to waste, we process the large volume of wood generated from our tree work through a dedicated Wood Recycling Programme, converting much of it into agricultural resources. Larger logs and timber are repurposed as materials for on-site facilities and Nature Art Programmes, and formed the foundation for Growth Ring: Empowering Wood Upcycling through Training and Innovation.

In this programme, participants first learn about tree species and wood processing from our experts. Veteran local artisans then teach traditional woodworking, furniture making and carving – skills recognised as Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage. Upon completion, participants become apprentices, gaining further experience as teaching and studio assistants, thus fulfilling the complete cycle of our Holistic Education philosophy.

Leveraging the unique natural landscape and cultural ambiance of Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, our activities may include guided tours, farm-to-table experiences, nature-based workshops, talks and art activities, aiming to promote understanding and practice of sustainable living for organisations.
