The growth rings of a tree quietly record the passing of time and nature’s stories. Running alongside the Ripples & Pulses Between the Rings: Growth Ring x Alvdalen Joint Woodcraft Exhibition, this showcase presents works created by apprentices of the Growth Ring using locally reclaimed timber, alongside ecological installation art by artist-in-residence Alvdalen – evealing how timber transforms from a forest resource into a poetic medium carrying time, memory, and imagination.

After exploring the exhibition, why not step into a wood-scented space with your loved ones to craft something lasting for your home?

Have you ever wondered how the chairs in your home are made? In this family workshop, you are invited to work alongside your partner or little ones using timber reclaimed from KFBG. Guided by the supportive hands of "New Chapters in Tree Rings" apprentice assistants, you will craft a one-of-a-kind family stool. Through the art of traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, your family will experience first-hand the craftsman's respect for nature and care for every single piece of timber.

The moment the stool comes together, it becomes more than a functional seat; it stands as a warm keepsake of time spent creating side by side. May this stool, lined with natural tree rings, keep your home company through countless warm moments to come.

• Timber Shaping & Mortise Joinery: Assemble your stool using traditional joinery techniques, discovering the tactile joy of wood fitting precisely together without nails or glue.
• Sanding & Natural Wax Finish: Sand the timber together to a silky-smooth touch and apply natural wax to reveal its warm sheen, preserving your family memories in wood.
• Stool Dimensions (for reference): Seat diameter approx. 250–300mm, thickness approx. 70mm; total height approx. 350–390mm (including legs).

About Growth Ring
As part of our routine tree management at Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, we sometimes need to prune or even remove certain trees. The timber, sourced from our own forests, possesses unique grain patterns that serve as an imprint of our local landscape. Unwilling to see this valuable material go to waste, we process the large volume of wood generated from our tree work through a dedicated Wood Recycling Programme, converting much of it into agricultural resources. Larger logs and timber are repurposed as materials for on-site facilities and Nature Art Programmes, and formed the foundation for Growth Ring: Empowering Wood Upcycling through Training and Innovation.

In this programme, participants first learn about tree species and wood processing from our experts. Veteran local artisans then teach traditional woodworking, furniture making and carving – skills recognised as Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage. Upon completion, participants become apprentices, gaining further experience as teaching and studio assistants, thus fulfilling the complete cycle of our Holistic Education philosophy.

Leveraging the unique natural landscape and cultural ambiance of Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, our activities may include guided tours, farm-to-table experiences, nature-based workshops, talks and art activities, aiming to promote understanding and practice of sustainable living for organisations.
