Exploring the History and Forest Ecology Amidst the Woods

Established in 1956, Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG) was formerly known as the Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Association. Spanning 148 hectares, it is divided into the Upper Area and the Lower Area. Compared to the Lower Area with its comprehensive environmental conservation and educational facilities, the Upper Area is designed to preserve its wild feeling with intentionally minimised man-made structures, making it a vibrant nature conservation area for flora and fauna.

Situated on the northern slopes of Tai Mo Shan, Kwun Yum Shan has silently witnessed the changes in its surrounding environment over the years, from the succession of vegetation and the flourishing of wildlife to the transformation of foothill villages and the rise of distant urban skyscrapers. The Upper Area Group Guided Tour leads you into this accessible woodland, following the perspective of Kwun Yum Shan to take in the magnificent scenery and the rural-urban transitions it has "watched over" day and night. This simple walking journey is not only a trip to learn about local woodland, but also an experience that prompts us to rethink our relationship with nature.

• Spectacular Scenery: With good visibility, you can enjoy panoramic views of the natural beauty of the eastern and western parts of the New Territories, and even glimpse the distant city skyline of Shenzhen.
• Historical Exploration: Learn about the development of KFBG, the naming of Kwun Yum Shan, the historical tea terrace remnants, and local history.
• Plant Diversity and Habitat Restoration: Discover how nature is closely related to human life through several iconic native plant species; overlook KFBG's habitat restoration site to understand the process of rebuilding a thriving native forest ecosystem; and observe the structure and ecological functions of a mature secondary forest.
• Tracing Wildlife: If you are lucky, you might hear the calls of wild animals or discover signs of their presence.
• Visiting Rescued Wildlife Associated with the Woodland: Learn the stories behind our animal ambassadors and reflect on the importance of protecting and restoring wildlife habitats.

Maximum 18 persons per group (leaders inclusive)

Fee
HK$5,000 per group (inclusive of the guided tour fee, shuttle bus service during the tour, and a one-time admission fee to KFBG)

*20% off for local registered schools and charity organisations; the group must submit a copy of school registration certificate or tax exemption certificate under Section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance.

Please contact us to verify available dates prior to submitting the online application form. Application should be submitted at least one month before your preferred date of visit. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Note

• The Upper Area retains its original countryside characteristics, featuring steep, uneven mountain paths and relatively fewer safety aids. The itinerary also requires getting on and off the shuttle bus multiple times. Participants should carefully assess their physical condition and stay mindful of their safety at all times.
• KFBG will not be responsible for any injury, or loss of or damage to participants’ belongings at KFBG or arising from the use of tools, equipment and/or facility provided or owned by KFBG. Participants can arrange adequate insurance coverage if deemed necessary.
• Due to terrain constraints and shuttle bus specifications, this activity is unfortunately not suitable for individuals with walking or standing difficulties, or those using walking frames or wheelchairs.
• Fees are non-refundable once paid, except where the session is cancelled due to inclement weather.
• KFBG reserves the right to change the content, walking route and/or time as necessary, depending on conditions, such as weather and operational needs.
