Enhancement of Native Fruit Source for Hainan Gibbon

Gibbon food tree nurseries

In order to increase the carrying capacity for gibbons in Bawangling National Nature Reserve (BNNR) in Hainan, Kadoorie Conservation China (KCC), a Department of KFBG, trained and supported BNNR to set up gibbon food tree nurseries in a hope to expand its usable habitat. Over 84,000 fast-growing gibbon food trees, consisting of 32 native species, including wild Lychee (Litchi chinensis), Endospermum (Endospermum chinense) and different fig species (Ficus spp.), have been planted in 150 hectares of degraded lowland habitat bordering the gibbons’ home ranges.
