Enhancement of Native Fruit Source for Hainan Gibbon

Gibbon food tree nurseries

In order to increase the carrying capacity for gibbons in Bawangling National Nature Reserve (BNNR) in Hainan, Kadoorie Conservation China Department (KCC) trained and supported BNNR to set up gibbon food tree nurseries in a hope to expand its usable habitat. Between 2005 and 2008, KCC together with the Reserve planted over 80,000 native gibbon food tree seedlings in 150 ha of degraded habitat, consisting of 32 native species, including wild Lychee (Litchi chinensis), Endospermum (Endospermum chinense) and different fig species (Ficus spp.). Many of these saplings already started fruiting, providing additional food sources for the gibbons.
